STEVE RYAN: IRON MAN
I may be wrong, but I think Steve Ryan’s love of golf transcends any misgivings he may have about playing again after having a hip replacement four (or maybe five) weeks ago. I hear he fronted up on Wednesday, and I saw the evidence myself on Saturday when he gave me a wave after having what I would guess was his second shot located in the usual place where his drive ends up. A bit of a limp evident, and lacking some of his usual power in the swing, but it won’t be too long before he’s right back into his usual game, unless his surgeon finds out and locks him in a cupboard. So, Iron Man Steve, I salute you, but take it easy. You’ll want to be in top form when the Bandit reappears with his new Queensland handicap.
Bill Fowler is back on the fairways again following his recent elbow damage. Andy Golby is soldiering on through thick and thin, and if he keeps doing what he’s told we might see if a couple of six-packs can kick him along. I hear he likes bath time. Tyrrell McGeever, another member recovering from surgery, a knee replacement, hasn’t been sighted yet, but going by my next door neighbour he’ll be out of golfing action for up to three months. My visit to the surgeon for the same problem was met with stubborn refusal to operate even after my previous visit five years earlier.
The raffle this week was a bit of a disaster, with Peter Corby winning another meat tray. He was also successful the previous week, and the week before that he won the beer. This time there were groans, and tears were also shed. I promise I won’t go near him next Saturday. Winner of the other meat tray was Tom Killeen, still a relatively new member, and as always it’s nice to see a change when this happens. The Crown Lager six-pack was won by Graeme Lanigin who reminded me that he really hits his drives 450 metres. He’s lost 50 metres since his last birthday.
