Ladies Pennant Results – Thursday 5th April 2018

The final round of Pennant was held on the 5th April with Safety Beach ladies playing against Portsea (2) at The Dunes. Unfortunately the ladies were unable to win a game despite trying hard as usual. The task was pretty tough as the handicaps for the opposition ranged from 16 to 18, meaning their highest handicapper played off a lower handicap than our team’s best player! Special mention to Barbara Bright who lost 3&2 while Angie Waters had a great tussle before losing 2&1.As it was the final day a presentation followed the completion of matches with Cape Moonah running out winners of Division 3 so they will play in Division 2 in 2019. Berwick Montuna were runners up. Alison Jones (GPV Secretary) announced the winners & also gave her thoughts on the status of the Pennant competition. The main theme was that whilst the women continue to play scratch events, the majority of the men’s events are based on handicap meaning that the numbers competing has increased significantly. Alison believes this makes for a fairer contest particularly for the smaller clubs in the district. Let’s hope this thinking changes the format in the future, as our club would prefer this option!

The winners of Division 1 were Sorrento (1) with The National (1) runners up so these 2 teams will play a final (only Division 1 has a final) on Thursday 12th April. It seems these 2 clubs finish first & second every year in Division 1! Sorrento (2) was bottom of Division (1) so will be relegated to Division 2 for 2019 while Flinders were winners of Division 2 from Rosebud (1) & Mornington Blue will be relegated to Division 3 in 2019.

Below is a photo taken of some of our team members relaxing after lunch prior to the presentation to the winners. You can’t miss Angie with those glasses!
