Raffle & Norm`s Ramblings

Members and friends of this golf club should give thanks to the various personalities involved in a myriad of ways throughout its organisation. Yesterday’s raffle went ahead as usual, Mike Henry missing out because he had to leave early. I sat down for a moment with Jack Simmons, who always buys tickets. He bought as usual, but then informed me that he would be leaving this week for a four-week cruise and then a three-month stay in England to get together with family and friends. However, buying tickets in the raffle this week was still a priority, and because winning a meat tray was a possibility he directed me to pass it on to someone else if he happened to win. He nominated Shane Johnson as a first choice because he has a large family to feed, but still left it to me to make a decision elsewhere if I thought fit. Jack’s ticket came out second, so Shane’s family can now look forward to dining on the excellence of the Cliffex meat tray this week. It’s people like Jack that leave me with a nice warm feeling as I trudge home on Saturday evenings. I reckon if I had pressed the issue he might even have paid in advance for the next four months (just joking). It pleases me greatly to let you know that we have people like Jack Simmons in this club.

Oh yes! There were a couple of extra prizes, and the other meat tray was won by Bill Fowler. Bill is having a good year so far, but mainly winning raffle prizes instead of golf comps. The Crown Lager six-pack went to Dave Lovell, another of the same ilk as Jack Simmons, quiet and unassuming (kiss, kiss).

I don’t want to get too carried away about club helpers, but I sure felt sorry for Di diddly I Di de Corrado when I arrived back for the afternoon session to find her huffing and puffing after having to deal with a large group of green fee players who descended on the dining area wanting food. Luckily, the party pies and sausage rolls came in handy to help get them satisfied. Panic of replacement before I landed in was avoided with Karen Rikken coming to the fore. Surely it should be a priority for the bar volunteers to be put in the picture when groups like this book in. We have a large freezer with suitable contents to enable catering to be provided. For peace of mind give those volunteers warning of what to expect when these occasions arise so that suitable food can be prepared in advance.

Following a flood disaster, eleven people were hanging on a rope, under a helicopter in flight, ten men and one woman. The rope was not strong enough to carry them all, so they decided that one would have to leave, otherwise they would all fall to their death. No one would volunteer, until a woman gave a short touching speech, saying that she would voluntarily let go because as a woman she was used to giving up everything for her husband and children, and was used to making sacrifices for people with little in return. As soon as she finished her speech, all the men started clapping . . .
