SUMMER CUP S.O.S.
The club is seeking those members who won the Summer Cup this year. It’s not known how many are required, but telephone calls are indicating that confusion reigns and players prepared to make a claim to the title should come forward and join in a special queue before next Saturday’s competition, if rain permits. If numbers are high, it’s rumoured that the final winner’s name will be drawn from the raffle barrel. Alan Sole’s unheralded win in the Easter Cup three years ago may entitle him to participate in this draw. Talking of rain, the Safety Beach area has received 355 mm of rain over the last three months, making greasy conditions rather difficult for some. Talking to Bill Fowler yesterday I found out that his current inability to play was caused by slipping down the slope on the first tee, falling, and ending up with a couple of hairline fractures of his elbow. Be careful! Use your golf club as a walking stick in treacherous conditions. Bill is a good club man, joining in the morning camaraderie each Saturday, and buying tickets in the raffle, even though being indisposed.
While numbers remain low each week with so many away in the sun, it doesn’t help the thrill of playing when the event consists of Canadian Foursomes. Yesterday’s very low numbers surely indicate the lack of interest in this game, and not worth going out on the course. In twenty years playing at Mornington I do not recall this ever being played on a Saturday. The same goes for Ambrose, which was only ever played on Sundays (mixed) and Cup Day. Irish Four Ball, Four Ball Multiple Stableford, Bisque Par and Carry the Flag were never played.
Saturday’s Cliffex meat trays were won by Tony Lever and Col Whittingham, and the Crown Lager six-pack went to Peter Corby.
